Suddenly, I remembered a trope which might effectively evoke a sandy landscape that I was comfortable working with: surf rock! This piece sat unfinished for a long time. I came back to it at a time when I decided to force myself to write longer melodies, to "write outside the barline" as my comp teacher used to say. That's where we get the long, somewhat rambling section in the middle.
